Questions

Kids Martial Arts: your questions, answered

Quick, direct answers. The things parents and new students ask us most.

What age can my child start martial arts?
Age 3. Mini Titans at Embellish Kickboxing Academy in Elk Grove is built for ages 3 to 6 and runs on play-based drills that teach listening and coordination. Beginner Kids runs ages 7 to 9, and students 10 to 14, or green belt and above, train in the Young Teens class.
What does a first kids class actually look like?
A first class at Embellish Kickboxing Academy starts with a warm-up that burns off energy, moves into technique drills broken down one step at a time, and ends with a short group activity. A coach is assigned to new students so your child is never left guessing what to do. Comfortable clothes and a water bottle are all that is needed.
Does martial arts make kids more aggressive?
No, and the honest reason is that the class spends far more time on self-control than on striking. Kids at Embellish Kickboxing Academy are taught that the skill has rules, that it stays in the room, and that losing your temper means sitting out. Parents more often report the opposite effect at home, because the child now has somewhere structured to put the energy.
What should a parent expect in the first month?
Expect the basics and not much flash. In the first month at the Elk Grove academy most kids learn the stance, a few core strikes, how class opens and closes, and the names of their coaches. Confidence usually shows up before technique does. Two to three classes a week is the pace where progress becomes visible.
Is martial arts safe for elementary-age kids?
Yes. Classes at Embellish Kickboxing Academy are grouped by age and skill level, taught technique first, and supervised by coaches with 25+ years of coaching experience. Sparring is never forced and is introduced only when a child is ready.
What if my child is shy, or too energetic?
Both do well here, for different reasons. Quieter kids get drawn out gradually by coaches who do not put them on the spot, and high-energy kids get a structure that channels the energy instead of fighting it. Neither type needs to be fixed before starting.
What if my child wants to quit after a few weeks?
That happens, and Embellish Kickboxing Academy would rather you say so than disappear. Talk to a coach at (916) 360-0758 first, because the cause is usually a specific thing, like one drill or one nervous moment, and it is often fixable. If martial arts genuinely is not for your child, nobody at the academy will pressure you to keep going.
