Questions

Muay Thai: your questions, answered

Quick, direct answers. The things parents and new students ask us most.

What is Muay Thai?
Muay Thai is the national striking art of Thailand, known as the art of eight limbs because it uses fists, elbows, knees, and shins as weapons, plus clinch work to control an opponent. Embellish Kickboxing Academy in Elk Grove teaches it to teens and adults, beginners included.
What is the difference between Muay Thai and kickboxing?
Muay Thai adds knees, elbows, and clinch work to the punches and kicks found in kickboxing. Kickboxing at Embellish Kickboxing Academy is the narrower striking set, and Muay Thai is the fuller one. Many students at the Elk Grove academy train in both.
Can a complete beginner start Muay Thai?
Yes. Every Muay Thai class at Embellish Kickboxing Academy in Elk Grove scales to the person in front of the coach, and no prior martial arts or fitness base is required. Beginners spend the early classes on stance, balance, and one or two strikes rather than trying to keep up with advanced students.
What does a first Muay Thai class involve?
A first class at the Elk Grove academy opens with conditioning, moves into technique broken down by stance, strike, and combination, then into pad work and bag work. You will not be thrown into sparring on day one. Expect to be tired and to leave with two or three things to practice.
What should I bring to my first Muay Thai class?
Comfortable athletic clothing you can move in and a water bottle. Nothing needs to be bought in advance at Embellish Kickboxing Academy. Coaches advise on gloves, wraps, and shin guards once you are training regularly.
Will I have to spar?
No. Sparring at Embellish Kickboxing Academy is introduced gradually, only when a student is ready, and it is never a requirement for training Muay Thai here. Plenty of adults train for years for the technique and conditioning without competing.
When do Muay Thai classes run in Elk Grove?
Muay Thai at Embellish Kickboxing Academy runs Mondays and Wednesdays at 8:00 PM and Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7:50 PM. Call the academy to confirm the current schedule before your first visit.

What Elk Grove members say

Rated 5.0 from 70+ Elk Grove members
"I've never been a big fitness person and found myself shy and unsure whenever I went to the gym. Mostly, I lacked the knowledge and motivation. I heard about Embellish Kickboxing through a friend and thought guided workouts and classes would benefit me, give me that push I needed. I started taking the FitBox classes and fell in love. I seriously went from not working out at all to taking 3-5 classes a week."
Brianna Perini
"In the fit box class the coaches push you to be the best version of yourself and not take the easy way out. You gain so much more than just a class but build a community of people who will push you and uplift you all at the same time."
Allie Villa
"It has been a blast training here. The coaches are awesome and training here has taught me so many things that I wouldn't have learned and I'm really happy that I started kickboxing."
