The details

When and where

The session

What you will work on

Five things, drilled properly, beat twenty things you half remember. This is the short list we teach first.

  • Awareness and distance

Reading a situation early and keeping space. Most trouble is avoidable, and this is the part nobody teaches.

  • Getting out of a grab

Wrists, arms, and from behind. Mechanics that work on leverage, not on being stronger than the person holding you.

  • A few strikes that land

Not a long list. A handful of targets and tools, drilled enough times that they are actually yours.

  • Staying functional under stress

Breathing and decision making with your heart rate up. Technique you cannot reach when you are scared is not technique.

  • Getting away

Making an opening and using it. The goal is to leave, not to win a fight.

Who it is for

You do not need to be the type

  • You have never trained

Most of the room will be in exactly the same spot. Nothing here assumes you know a thing.

  • You trained once, years ago

Come knock the rust off. You will still get something out of the fundamentals.

  • You are out on your own a lot

Walking to the car after a shift, traveling alone, running early or late. This is built for ordinary life.

  • You would rather not come alone

Bring a friend, a sister, your mom, your daughter if she is 15 or older. Plenty of people sign up in pairs.

Before you come

What to wear and bring

  • What to wear

Comfortable workout clothes you can move in. Hair tied back. Leave the jewelry at home.

  • What to bring

A water bottle. That is it. Any gear a drill calls for, we have.

  • Shoes or bare feet

Either works. Clean athletic shoes are fine on our mats, and so are bare feet.

  • When to arrive

Ten minutes early so we can greet you, show you around, and start on time.

Who is teaching

Coach Fred and the Embellish staff

Fred has been coaching martial arts for over 25 years and has run this academy in Elk Grove since 2021. He teaches the way he would want someone to teach his own family, which means plainly, patiently, and without making anyone feel behind.

Questions

The things people ask first

Is it really free?
Yes. No cost to attend, nothing to buy on the day, and nothing you have to sign up for afterward. There are also small gifts for everyone who comes.
How old do you have to be?
Fifteen and up. The material and the pace are built for teens and adults, so we hold the line at fifteen rather than running two different sessions in seventy-five minutes.
Do I need any experience?
No. This is built for people who have never thrown a punch. Every drill is explained from zero and a coach walks the floor the whole time.
Do I need to be in shape?
No. It is paced for a room of beginners and you can sit a drill out at any point without anybody making a thing of it.
Will I get hurt?
There is no sparring. Everything is drilled with a partner at a controlled pace with a coach watching. You should leave a little tired, not sore.
Can I come by myself?
Yes, and plenty of people do. You will be partnered up and looked after.
What if I am nervous about it?
Say so when you walk in. It is the most common thing we hear and it is the easiest thing for us to handle.
Do I have to be a member?
No. The seminar is open to the public and you do not need any connection to the academy to come.
Do you have ongoing classes too?
Yes. We run self defense classes in Elk Grove year round, and the seminar is a fair way to find out whether training is for you before committing to anything.
